Let the Adventure Begin!

In the words of the Cheshire Cat, “Every adventure requires a first step. Trite, but true, even here.”

There is very little doubt but that the Indians have traveled down a rabbit hole and are desperately clinging to life – hanging onto 2nd place in an attempt to catch the Tigers while separating themselves from the pesky White Sox.

The smell of doom and disaster is all around. Then along come the King and Queen of Hearts with a special and rather unexpected gift… Jim freaking Thome.

I know there are bittermen out there who hate this deal, as well as cynics who think Thome is about three years past his prime.  As the Mad Hatter would say, “Don’t let’s be silly.” But I am smiling from ear to ear over this development.

Like Alice in Wonderland, some might see this as being a lot of nonsense; a story that defies logic.  To them I say, “Yep.”  After all, isn’t this whole season a story of illogical nonsense?

No one expected the Indians to compete for anything other than the cellar this season.  But they were all wrong.  And even after the fabulous start in April and May, no one expected them to sustain their standing.  But they were all wrong.  And now, the chatter has already begun that there is no way Jim Thome with his meager .243 batting average and 12 home runs can have any impact on this team.  But they will all be wrong.

In the words of the King of Hearts, “Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.”

Let’s play this out and see where we end up.  63 down, 27 to go.
