Johnny Freaking Damon

As far back as I can remember, the Indians have routinely augmented their otherwise minuscule payroll with a big name player in the latter stages of his career. From Boog Powell and Frank Robinson to Eddie Murray and Jim Thome.

So it comes as no surprise, given the rough and unpromising start to the 2012 campaign, that ownership is reaching into one of its oldest bag of tricks.

But you know what? I am pumped. This team needs a leader, a mentor, someone – anyone – to look up to. And, yeah, Johnny Damon could be that guy. I always hoped it would be Travis Hafner or… I guess that’s it. Face it, there is very little natural leadership on this team, just a lot of young guns and unproven journeymen. All good and talented guys, but guys without direction.

And this is not a shot at the man – Manny – that I love. It’s just an acknowledgement that a proven stud with a bit of swagger in an Indians uniform couldn’t hurt.

So let’s do this thing… Let’s get it started.
