And Now for Something Completely Different… the 2012 Indians Season.

What’s the definition of insanity?  Doing the same thing over and over and thinking the results will be different?

Welcome to the 2012 Cleveland Indians… and something completely different.

If you’ve been following the news, you’ve likely not heard the Cleveland Indians name come up once – until yesterday when Ubaldo got suspended for plunking one of the Colorado Rockheads (allegedly) during a meaningless preseason game that Commissioner Selig just happened to be attending.

We’ve been flying so low below the radar no one has noticed us.  But they soon will.  They will remind us that the decision to resign Grady Sizemore was a bad one, as he is hurt once again.  And Brantley is moving to center field, leaving left field truly vacant.  And after weeks of open auditions, the Tribe has settled on Shelley “don’tlookbacktheymightbegainingonyou” Duncan as the best available liability for that position.  And that is all true.

A little closer to home, you will hear that the battles for first and third base were settled with yawns, as differences between competitors were measurable with micrometers… and the promise of LaPorta and Chisenhall are once again unfulfilled.  And the pitching staff, which was questionable before Ubaldo got suspended, has become a speculators paradise.  Again, all true.

But consider this.  Manny and Sandy are at the wheel.  And without much stretch of the imagination one could easily see Travis Hafner, Asdrubal Cabrera, Shin Soo Choo, Shelley Duncan, Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana hitting near .300 with 20 homers apiece.  And with Justin Masterson at the front end of the pitching staff and Chris Perez at the back end of the bully, there is every reason to believe.

Yeah, a lot of people are talking about Detroit and what a great season the Tigers are going to have.  Some are even pointing to the Kansas City Royals as the team to watch.  Meanwhile, Keith Law is crying about how the Indians got lucky last year (blah, blah, baby) and Vegas is listing Cleveland as a 60-to-1 long shot to win the World Series this year.

My prediction?  The same as every year:  90 wins and a run through the post-season.

I’ve been waiting since October.  I’ve tuned up the tour bus.  And we are ready to pull out of the station.  Who is with me?
