How Do You Like Them Apples?

A conversation overheard in a bah in south Boston last night…

Are we gonna have a problem?

No, no…there’s no problem here. I was just hoping you might give me some insight into the evolution of the Indians’ performance in the Central division. My contention is that prior to the 1990s, the team modalities, especially in the Central division, could most aptly be characterized as agrarian, aka farm team caliber…

Of course that’s your contention. You’re a fairweather fan. You just got finished rootin’ for the Red Sox — Adrian Gonzalez probably. You’re gonna be convinced of that ’til next month when you get to Jacoby Ellsbury, and then you’re gonna be talkin’ about how hitting and base stealing are more important against teams like Cleveland and Phildelphia. That’s gonna last until next year, when you start talking about getting rid of Bedard and finding better starting pitching.

Well, as a matter of fact, I won’t, because Bedard is drastically under-rated…

Bedard is drastically under-rated given his earlier lack of run support and an ERA under 2.0.  You got that from the Boston Globe. Yeah, I read that too. See the sad thing about a guy like you is that at the end of this season, you’re gonna start doin’ some thinkin’ on your own and you’re gonna come up with the fact that there are two certainties in life.

One: the Cleveland Indians are a great team.  And two: You dropped a hundred and fifty bucks to watch the Red Sox lose a freakin’ game at Fenway Park that you coulda’ watched at the bah for the cost of a cold beer.

Yeah, but we still have the ’07 Championship. And you got nothing but the Terminal Tower and the dream of what could be.

Yeah, maybe. Yeah, but at least I won’t be you. By the way if you have a problem with that, I mean, we could just step outside and we could figure it out.
