I Was Born in August, No, July, 1908.

Leroy Satchel Paige was born on July 7, 1906.  Or August 1908.  What did it really matter?

In 1965, at an estimated age that exceeds mine, he took to the hill for the last time.  Paige was a man’s man… a pro’s pro… or in the words of Joe DiMaggio, “The best and fastest pitcher I’ve ever faced.”

Although history will show that he turned pro in 1948 – when he joined the Cleveland Indians just in time for the pennant race – seems to me that Satchel Paige would fit in perfectly with the current Indians.

I’m pretty sure Manny Acta would like him.  He’s a hard worker, a realist, a joker, a man of supreme confidence, an optimist and a damn good ballplayer.  And he believed that anything was possible.  And the Dolan family would love his salary.

At 105 or 103, he might be a little grey around the temples, but no matter.  You can never have too many quality pitchers.  And as Satchel was known to ponder regarding the matter of age, “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?”
